Week of March 9th, 2020
Students will be read the book, "The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose in the School" by Laura Murray. Students will check out a new book for the week. Since the book fair is being held in the library next week, students will keep this book for two weeks. Students will then be given activity sheets to go along with the book. Students will complete a sequencing activity for the book as well as a word search about the book. Students will also have the option of taking a coloring page of the front cover of the book.

Students will be read the book, "Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Bully Shark" by Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna. We will discuss the book in terms of the message about being kind as well as talk about what ocean animals were in the book. Students will check out a new book for the week. Students will perform a craft relating to the book before reading to self for the remainder of class.

In honor of President's Day, students will be read the book, "President's Day" by Anne Rockwell. Students will check out a new book for the week before completing a President's Day worksheet. Students will finish the statement, "If I were president....". Students will read to self for any time remaining in class.

To celebrate Valentine's week, students will be read the book, "Click Clack Moo, I Love You" by Doreen Cronin. After checking out a new book for the week, students will make a duck paper bag puppet to resemble the character in the book. Students will read to self for the remainder of class.

In celebration of the 100th day of school, students will be read, "Planet Kindergarten-100 Days in Orbit" by Sue Ganz-Schmitt. As a class we will discuss the accomplishments that we have had since the first day of school. Students will check out a new book for the week and complete a worksheet where they will include stampers to make 100 gumballs in a gumball machine. Students will read to self for any time remaining in class.

The second book, "But I Read it on the Internet" by Toni Buzzeo makes students aware that not everything found on the Internet is true. After checking out a new book for the week, students will do a coloring page stating they will be kind online. Any remaining time left in class will be spent reading to self.

Students will make "magic wands" that include an important lesson that they learned from the book. Students will check out a new book for the week. Students will get to vote on which Christmas book I read aloud to them today. Following the story, students will check out a new book for over Christmas break. For the remainder of class, students will be paired up with a classmate to work together using STEM resources we have available in the library. Items available for them to use this week are the code and go mouse sets, Keeva planks, and Magformers. Each of the resources will be demonstrated for them before they use them during the remainder of class as an exploration time.

These books are great stories for the Holidays that also have important messages about kindness. After checking out a new book for the week, students will create a candy cane ornament using strips of paper and an outline of a candy cane.

Students will be read the book, "Thanksgiving at the Tappletons". Students will complete a Thanksgiving crossword where they will find and circle four Thanksgiving words. Students will also be given a coloring sheet reminding them of the book fair that takes place next week

Students will learn about hibernation and migration by reading the fiction book, "Those Darn Squirrels" by Adam Rubbin. As a class we will discuss why squirrels prepare for winter. Students will check out a new book for the week before completing an acorn number order worksheet. Students will have to color, cut, and paste the acorns to be in the proper number order. Students will read to self when finished.

After checking out a new book for the week, students will complete a worksheet where they need to draw their favorite character in the book as well as write the name of the character. As a class, we will make a list of the characters in the book and display them on the white board for students to copy. Students will read to self for the remainder of class.

This book talks about the variety of changes the fall seasons brings in a creative and rhyming way. Students will check out a new book for the week before completing a kindergarten sight word coloring page. Students will read to self for any time remaining in class.

Students will watch the introductory video to the book, "Groovy Joe Ice Cream and Dinosaurs" before being read the book. Students will be encouraged to participate by singing the song that is throughout the book. Students will then have a brief dance party to the song, "The Groovy Dance". Students will check out a new book for the week before they complete the worksheet that goes along with the book. On the worksheet students will have to draw what they like to share. Students will read to self for the remainder of class.

We will discuss the story as well as other ways to be kind. As a class we will read, "Walk with Vanessa" by Kersacoet. This is a picture book with no words that we will interpret as a class. After checking out a new book for the week, students will complete a color, cut, and paste activity that separates kind and unkind gestures.

Students will then be read "Froggy Eats Out" by Jonathan London. As characters use their senses in the story, students will be asked to point to the part of the body of which the sense is taking place. After checking out a new book for the week students will complete a worksheet about "Froggy Eats Out". Students will be asked if they liked the book as well as given space to draw a picture about the book.

When checking out a book for the week students will be encouraged to look for a book on a topic they are interested in. Students will also learn the basic parts of a book that includes the spine. Students will be shown how books are placed on the shelf with the spine pointing towards them so the title is visible. Students will complete a coloring sheet on the parts of a book before reading to self for the remainder of class.

This week during library students will be read the book, "Library Lion" by Michelle Knudsen. This book is a great introduction for students to learn the rules of the library. After reading the book, we will brainstorm a list of rules that the Wilson Creek Library should adopt. Students will be given a tour of the library and be shown the difference between the fiction and non-ficton sections. Students will be introduced to the process of selecting and checking out a book, although students will not be checking out books to take home this week. Students will have an opportunity to page through a variety of picture books set out at the tables. If time allows, to conclude class, students will be read an Elephant and Piggie book by Mo Willems.
