Week of March 9th, 2020
Kindergarten and first grade students will be introduced to their coding unit. Kindergarten students will be introduced to what coding is by doing an offline activity where they have to put in order the steps of washing your hands. Students will also direct me how to get from one part of the room to another while using precise commands. Kindergarten students will be introduced to the kodable website by watching a brief video titled, "Meet the Fuzz Family". Each students will be given log-in and picture password to gain access to their lessons on kodable. Students will use the remaining class time to work through their lessons. First grade students will review what they know about coding from last year. Students will watch a brief video that introduces coding to kids. Students will receive log-ins for their accounts on code.org. Students will begin working on their lessons in the pre-reader course. Second grade students will begin their Internet Safety unit. Students will be shown age appropriate videos from Childnet International to learn about the SMART rules. This weeks lessons focus on rule A: Accepting e-mails, instant and direct messages, or opening files, images or texts from people you don't know or trust can lead to problems and Rule R: Information on the Internet may not always be true; it may be incorrect, out of date ,or reflect someone's personal opinion or beliefs. Students will use the vocaroo voice recorder site to record their reflection. Their reflection will be converted to a QR code using the QR stuff website. When not recording, students will have activities bookmarked for them on only2clicks revolved around typing.

Kindergarten students will complete a dice addition activity in Pixie. In addition, students will play rhyming games that are bookmarked for them on only2clicks. First grade students will complete a compound word activity in Pixie. Students will use pictures and text boxes to form compound words. Once finished, students will play compound word games bookmarked for them on only2clicks. Second grade students will complete a coin activity in Pixie where they will identify the coin as well as the value associated with each coin. Once finished, students will play number line games bookmarked for them on only2clicks.

Kindergarten students will learn about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington by reading about them in PebbleGo. Then, as a class we will complete a Pixie activity that compares that two presidents using a Venn Diagram. First grade students will complete a worksheet on contractions in Microsoft Excel. Students will type in the two words to build the given contraction or type the contraction for the two given words. When a correct answer is typed in, the cell will turn green. When students are finished, they will play keyboard climber. Second grade students will use Safe Search Kids to research questions about candy. Students will be encouraged to use keywords to perform their search. Students will also be given an old fashioned candy saucer candy to eat to go along with the grade level's candy land unit.

Students will learn how to use the shading tool in Excel as they shade the numbers counting by 10. First grade students will complete a compound words worksheet in Excel. Students will fill in the blank cells to create and break apart compound words. Students that are finished early will create a short valentine for a parent using the festisite heart layout. Second grade students will learn how to use the shading tool in Microsoft Word while also learning about cell addresses and ranges. Students will be given a set of instructions containing cells and cell ranges to be shaded. The final product if done correctly will resemble a heart.

The focus of this unit is to expose the students to the program and get them comfortable entering information and navigating about a spreadsheet. Students will not be taught about more advanced features including formulas, etc. Kindergarten students will open a template and create a 100's chart in Microsoft Excel. First grade students will create a 120's chart in Excel. Second grade students will enter information provided to them about the high temperatures in the month of January for 2019 and 2020. Students will then be taught how to convert the data into a line graph to compare the data.

Students will learn the importance of checking in with a trusted adult and to always tell a trusted adult if anything makes them feel unsafe, scared, or uncomfortable. First grade students will have a lesson on using a search engine. Students will learn to use keywords to research topics rather than typing in a whole question to a search engine. Students will also learn about advertisements and their purpose. Students will be directed not to click on advertisements when doing research. Second grade students will conclude their final week of research on a famous African American. Students will print a picture of the person that they researched to include in a project they will be doing with their classroom teacher.

First grade students will take part in the "How Technology Makes you Feel" lesson plan from Commonsense Media. Nearpod will be used to present the material in the lesson. Students will learn to recognize feelings that they have when using technology as well as learn what to do when technology gives them a bad feeling. Second grade students will continue researching a famous African American that they chose last class. First grade students will participate in an interactive lesson on Internet Safety by using the Nearpod platform and a lesson from Commonsense Media. This weeks lesson teaches the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful online. Second grade students will begin an African American history research project. Each student will choose a famous African American from a specified list and use the next few classes to learn about that person and the impact they have made in the world. Students will use a guided notes sheet to document information that they find. Students will have the option to choose a person that is of interest to them including both past and current athletes, politicians, scientists, civil rights leaders, business leaders, writers, and musicians.

As a reward and thank you for working so hard each week, this week students will be given an opportunity to choose the activity(s) that they will participate in during class. Students will have access to all of the software used to this date, Internet based games we have played thus far, as well as Christmas themed games. Merry Christmas!

Week of December 9th, 2019
All grade levels will be working in Microsoft Word to type a letter to Santa. First and second grade students will be shown the correct format for a friendly letter, while kindergarten students will type a basic letter that includes the greeting, sentence containing what they want, and a closing. All of these letters will be mailed to the North Pole via the mailbox at Macy's. For each letter received, Macy's donates $1 to the Make a Wish Foundation. Wilson Creek students get very excited not only to write to Santa, but to also know that they are helping sick children.

Skills focused on will be starting a sentence with a capital, ending with a period, using one space between words, pressing return to move down a line, as well as changing the size of the font. First grade students will be composing a paragraph that includes a topic sentence and three details. Emphasis will be placed on supporting the topic sentence with details. Students will learn about using the tab key to indent to start off a paragraph. Second grade students will be creating a Christmas Tree in Microsoft Word. Second grade students will create Thankful pumpkins in Microsoft Word. Students will type a list of eight things that they are thankful for while changing the fonts and center aligning the text. Students will print the document on orange paper and follow directions to form their creations into a pumpkin.

Students will read/listen to articles about both of those topics while also being shown brief videos about migration and hibernation. Students will then create a Pixie document that uses stickers to list animals that either migrate or hibernate. Students will be given written visual instructions about where to find the sticker of each animal. Students that are done early will play Marcelino's Letters to practice locating letters on the keyboard. First grade students will use Microsoft Word to create a recipe for friendship. In addition to the formatting that they have already learned, students will also learn how to add bullet points to a document. Second grade students will learn how to insert images from the Internet into a Microsoft Word document. Students will learn how to copy and paste images as well as how to save them to the computer and insert them into a document. Students in this class will create a Halloween picture in Pixie and copy the sentence, "Halloween is __". First grade students will work in Microsoft Word to compose a rhyming poem about bats. As a class we will brainstorm a list of words that rhyme with bat so the students can use that as a reference. Students will be encouraged to use the various formatting skills we have learned in Word to make their work organized and appealing. Second grade students will finish up their last week of the habitats webquest. Students will work in their groups to complete the letter to the zoo director. All groups will be given the option to present their poster and letter to the class during the remaining class time.

First grade students will type a pumpkin poem in Microsoft Word by copying the poem from a provided sheet that includes formatting instructions. Students will learn how to bold, underline, and change the font color, alignment, and size of text. Second grade students will continue working on the habitats webquest in their assigned groups. Such issues include how to move a window, how to adjust the volume, what to do if a dialogue box shows up, what to do if a pop up menus shows up, as well as a variety of user error fixes. Students will then complete an apple counting activity in Pixie before ending the class by playing typing games. First grade students will read an article in PebbleGo on how animals communicate. Students will then choose one animal that is mentioned in the article and create a Pixie document describing how that animal communicates. Students will also get the opportunity to illustrate their document. Second grade students will share with their group members what they learned about their assigned habitat. Students will work together in their groups to create a poster illustrating what their habitat looks like including what lives and grows there.

Students will use the paint tools in Pixie to draw a picture of their choosing. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of paint tools while creating an identifiable picture. First grade students will read a book on Starfall titled, "I Can Do It". This book contains a moral to the story which will be discussed as a class. Once finished, students will type what moral they learned from the story as well as draw a picture to illustrate it in Pixie. Second grade students will continue researching their assigned habitat. Students will be taught how to use the Safe Search Kids search engine to locate information that was not found on PebbleGo or the bookmarked sites.
Kindergarten students will be introduced to the drawing tools in Pixie. Students will then create a new document that includes their name typed beginning with a capital. Students will use the paint tools in Pixie to draw a picture of their choosing. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of paint tools while creating an identifiable picture. First grade students will read a book on Starfall titled, "I Can Do It". This book contains a moral to the story which will be discussed as a class. Once finished, students will type what moral they learned from the story as well as draw a picture to illustrate it in Pixie. Second grade students will continue researching their assigned habitat. Week of September 23rd, 2019
Kindergarten students will complete a five senses activity in Pixie. Students will look for stickers in the program that you would use each of the senses for. Students will be encouraged to find five stickers for each of the senses. Students will also play a five senses game from ABCYA. First grade students will use the switch zoo website to design their own breed of animal. After creating an animal, students will write about their creation. Students will be encouraged to use complete sentences and creative spelling. Second grade students will begin week two of their habitats project. Students will really begin to dig into the research on their assigned topic and habitat. Each student in the group of three has a different role to research. Students will fill out a worksheet provided to them to organize their information.

Kindergarten students will review how to capitalize letters by using the shift key. Students will play "Keyboard Zoo 2" which focuses on this skill. Students will then create a Pixie document that includes letter blocks of the alphabet. Under each block students will type the lower case and upper case version of each letter. First grade students will create a Pixie document that focuses on opinion writing. Students will complete the sentence, "My favorite place to visit is __ because _____." Students will then have an opportunity to illustrate their sentence by using stickers and paint tools in Pixie. Second grade students will begin a several week project on habitats. Students will be put into groups of three or four students. Students will be given the pretend scenario that a zoo is coming to Manhattan and the zoo director needs to know what animals and plants will survive in each habitat. Students will be given online resources to research to learn more about their assigned habitat. Responsibilities will be divided among the group. One person will research animals from the habitat, another will research plants from the habitat, and the third will research general characteristics of the assigned habitat. This weeks class will introduce the project, put students in assigned groups, and give students a few minutes to begin their research.

Students will be introduced to the Pixie program. Students will use stickers in the program to create a page of the computers parts that they learned about. First grade students will use the Pixie program to create a drawing of themselves while using the webcam to take a pic of their face. Students will then type complete sentences about themselves. Second grade students will get to pick a breed of dog to learn about. They will read about their chosen breed in PebbleGo. Students will then create a Pixie document that is an informational poster about what they learned about their chosen dog breed.

Students will play a variety of computer games where they will use the keyboard to press a letter and hear the letter sounds. First grade students will have a lesson using the Pixie creative software. Students will create a document of their favorite things. Students will use textboxes to label all of the stickers of their favorite things. Second grade students will prepare for grandparent's day. In Pixie, students will fill out a Venn Diagram comparing themselves to one of their grandparents (parent, guardian, etc.). Students will use stickers, drawings, and words to list similarities and differences.

Students will practice these skills by playing a variety of computer games that are bookmarked on my only2clicks account. First grade students will begin learning about the parts of the computer. In addition to the hardware, students will learn about input and output devices. Students will also learn about the difference between a PC and a Mac. This lesson will be taught by using videos, Smart board activities, and computer game type activities. Second grade students will also learn about the parts of a computer. Students will learn through the use of an activity from Brain Pop Jr. as well as a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" type computer game on computer parts.

Welcome back! I am excited for another fun and productive year in the computer lab! This week students will be assigned a workstation, provided a name tag, and will learn the rules and procedures for the lab in order to make it an outstanding year! First and second grade students will review the rules and procedures with a fun kahoot game! They will learn how to properly turn on and shut down the computers while reviewing the correct way to use a computer mouse. Kindergarten students will learn how to hold the mouse by making a v with their fingers and only using their pointer finger to click. |
